OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANCE DISORDER (ODD)

You may have heard of ODD but wonder what it is. The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry says it is a true disorder, but most medical professionals and scientists admit there is no proven theory for what causes it. Current thinking supports two possible theories: the developmental theory proposes that ODD results from incomplete child development; that ODD children never complete the developmental tasks normal children master as toddlers. The learning theory suggests ODD surfaces as a response to negative interactions; that techniques used by parents and authority figures on these children evoke oppositional defiant behavior.
