TrendTRACKS: Raising a Reader, Fresh New Books

One thing I have done with my kids since they were babies is read to them every single night. We read during the day when there is opportunity but without fail, I always prioritize about 30 minutes of reading time at night.

Even now, my 8 year old still loves for her dad and I to read to her even though she is a proficient reader herself.

I found that if I enjoyed the book I was reading then they enjoyed the book. If I laughed they laughed and so on.

So, I am always on the search for a fun book to read to my kids.

I recently reviewed two brand new baby/toddler books by Leslie Patricelli including Higher! Higher! and Baby Happy Baby Sad. Winner of Child Magazine Best of the Year BabyZone Amazing Toy Award, her books are full of brightly hued cartoon drawings. Her one-word explanations of anything from emotions to opposites are totally engaging for your young one.

Here is a great review on some recent books from Kids Trends Weekly Online Ma...

Skippy John Jones is hee-lariouso! And American Girl is a history lesson and memorable story wrapped up in one book. I have very fond memories of my mother reading "The Secret Garden" and "Little Women" to me. I plan to read both to my little girl after we finish the "Little House on the Prairie" series.

For my boys, we read the entire series of the following and LOVED every minute of them:
Harry Potter
The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings
The Chronicles of Narnia

I almost cried when we finished the last Harry Potter book, but we have three more movies to look forward to! Also, did you hear Peter Jackson will film two movies about "The Hobbit"? Can't wait for those! I'll be posting a blog about that soon.

Great post Janel!
