No FUN Funds? Check Out These FREE Fun Activities for Kids!

Consumer confidence is down to 25, its lowest level in 41 years. Free is the name of the game during tough economic times, and lucky for those of us who live here in the Triangle, there are quite a few free family-friendly activities available to us. Here are our top 3 places to have a FREE, FUN time with your kids!

1. MUSEUMS. Here in the Triangle, we have access to a great variety of museums--many of which are free to visitors. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh offers free general admission (donations are accepted) but there is a cover charge for special exhibits. Just next door, the North Carolina Museum of History also offers free general admission and includes wonderful exhibits representing our state's intriguing history. Visit Museum TRACKS for information on the region's other 13 museums, including a coupon for admission to the Museum of Life and Science in Durham.

2. LIBRARIES and BOOK STORES. Nearly all of the Triangle's public libraries and several book stores offer free story hours and craft activities for young children on a regular basis. Add that to the fact that you can spend hours with your children reading wonderful books together and it's easy to understand why libraries and book stores are the perfect place to go for a FREE, FUN time. Visit Book TRACKS to link to information about story/craft hours at local libraries and book stores.

3. OUTDOORS. Enjoy the great outdoors at one of hundreds of local playgrounds. Take along picnic lunch and your bikes for a fun-filled day. Visit Outdoor TRACKS for a directory of playgrounds, trails and more.

Great comments Mom--I mean Liz. :) We actually link to local consignment stores on the Trend TRACKS page, and the Book TRACKS page links to libraries and bookstores. I have a feeling stores offering "gently used" products are going to boom right now!

"Gently-used" books, like gently used clothing is a great way to economize and yet with hardly notice of these books and clothes being used. Hats off the such innovative stores. With the unsteady economy these are inspiring for the burdens of already stress out pocketbooks of many of us.

Since we lived in a University town, my girls were able to take music lessons for violin and viola for very inexpensive rates. Graduate students taught the lessons and the girls did learn a good bit. With the proximity of UNC I would wonder if there were such offers by Grad. students? Liz Neely

To have free arts and crafts activities is grand. My girls had a grandmother who was a limitless source of arts and crafts. Since the, I have heard from other teachers and friends how many times they noticed how talented my girls are. Tapping into these interests by their grandmother developed their innate talents and interests. The offering by the libraries is really a good way to develop interests and talents. Liz Neely
