My father's latest column reflects on growing up in his hometown of Lincolnton, Ga. As a child, he writes, "the world loomed big ... WCPSS' Communications Department has issued a statement that during Dec. 15 discussions in the committee of the whole meeting and in the board meeting, the board discussed its intent to permit voluntary year-round assignments to continue while ending mandatory year-round assignments beginning with the 2010-11 academic year. All district schools are dismissing early today due to inclement weather. Elementary Schools will dismiss at 12 p.m., middle schools will dismiss at 12:45 p.m. and high schools will dismiss at 1:30 p.m. All after-school events for Friday, December 18 and Saturday, December 19 have been canceled. The district's elementary after-school program will also be closed Friday, December 18.

Just in from WCPSS: The Wake County Public School System will release students from school one hour early today, Friday, Dec. 18 due to pending winter weather and its potential impact on road conditions.
