"Eclipse" is Now in Theaters - Will your Tween See It?

I received a call from my college roommate last night. Her almost 11-year-old daughter had been invited to see the midnight showing of "Eclipse". She said her instincts were telling her to say NO - and not just because the movie started at midnight. She called me because she knew I had read the book series and seen the first two Twilight movies.

My answer to her: you are absolutely right to not let her go to this…

A "Mom's Weekend"…Disguised as Kids' Birthday Party

I wanted to change things up this year…to mark my son's 7th birthday in a more unique- okay, I'll be honest- less stressful & more fulfilling way. For our son, being social and 7 means tons of friends and thus, attending lots of birthday adventures. He may not have had his fill of 'jumpy places', but I had. Plus, I had thought of a way around stuffing gift baggies and addressing invitations - We'd go away! Out of town…to a place little boys dream of- Great Wolf Lodge. My…

When We Made Toys

Green Toys, Before Green Was Cool
By Tom Poland, from his "Across the Savannah" series

It was like cutting through steel. I had to get out my electric Black & Decker scissors to cut through the hard clear plastic that entrapped brand new remote-controlled helicopters for my grandsons from North Carolina.… Continue

I Dreamed of being on stage and being "Annie".

The first time I saw "Annie" I was 12 years old. My family had just moved to New Jersey from South Carolina and my father wanted to do something really special for me. My very first Broadway Show was "Annie", and what an amazing production it was!!!! The singing, dancing, and stage sets were fantastic! I loved the whole story of Annie and the show was incredible eventhough we were way up in the topmost part of the balcony and everyone on stage resembled tiny miniatures. I will never forget…

Fighting Over Annie!

When I was growing up, we used to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins every summer. One summer all of us were obssessed with Annie. We watched the movie over, and over, and over again- to the point I thought our parents were going to hide it! My cousins owned one of the brown Fisher-Price tape recorders and I had the Annie soundtrack on tape. You'd think we'd work together and listen to my tape on their tape player. . . but, noooooooooo. . . that would have made too much sense. To this day,… Continue

Boy Scouts Troop 316 Service Projects, Camping Trips and Merit Badges Make Their Mark on the Community

It didn't take long for a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 316 to hang five birdfeeders for Hospice of Wake County, but the visual benefits residents there will enjoy should provide lasting - and for some, last - memories.

It's only the latest service project Boy Scouts Troop 316 of Apex has participated in since last fall. Others included the annual delivery of luminaries in December and a canned food drive for the Brown Bag… Continue

How Losing a Library Book Forced Me to Grow Up - a Little

Not every 10-year-old experiences stress, debt and employment all at once. I was one of the lucky few.

It happened the day I lost a library book. My mother walked into my spotless, organized half of the bedroom I shared with my sister, put her hands on her hips and stated, quite calmly, "If you can't find it, you'll just have to pay for it."

This sort of thing did not happen to me.

I turned the entire bedroom… Continue

Putting Annie on stage in Holly Springs

I believe I was 6 the first time I saw Annie on stage - in New York City! Little did I know that a few years, ok decades later, I would help put the show on stage. I direct STARS Youth Theater in Holly Springs and our mission statement is to bring out the STAR in everyone, therefore we do not do auditions for a show. Students sign up to participate and we find a role for them. I am proud to say that our first musical production, Annie Jr., was a HUGE success!! All of our shows sold out and the… Continue

My memories of "Annie"

My memory of ANNIE is going to see it on BROADWAY on my 6th birthday with my twin sister, grandparents, and aunt & uncle - in the front row! It was amazing being right behind the orchestra leader. He asked my sister and I at one point if we wanted to be in the show - since we are twins and we were so cute and the ...right age. We told him we would have to ask our mom…

Five Ways We Used to Beat the Heat

We hope you enjoy "Beat the Heat" - the latest column from Author Tom Poland's "Across the Savannah" series.
