Swine Flu

Image from Yahoo News

I think that being a parent makes you a bit more paranoid about disease and infection. Most of us aren't worried about ourselves, rather we worry about our little ones coming down with something. A flu outbreak isn't supposed to be happening at this time of the year. We are supposed to be stocking up on sunscreen, finding out when the neighborhood pool opens up and figuring out if we can swing a trip… Continue

Recession affecting schools--sometimes in surprising ways

Almost every day, I read something new about guidelines for North Carolina’s schools http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1505426.html or how Wake County schools are handling budget shortfalls http://www.newsobserver.com/news/education/story/1505290.html and http://www.newsobserver.com/news/education/story/1503743.html.

I wonder about the new elementary being built, Alston Ridge, that my children are slated to attend in 2010-11. And I wonder how much all the number-crunching and… Continue

TrendTRACKS: Raising a Reader, Fresh New Books

One thing I have done with my kids since they were babies is read to them every single night. We read during the day when there is opportunity but without fail, I always prioritize about 30 minutes of reading time at night.

Even now, my 8 year old still loves for her dad and I to read to her even though she is a proficient reader herself.

I found that if I enjoyed the book I was reading then they enjoyed the book. If I laughed they laughed and so on.

So, I am… Continue

Wake County High School Juniors are Breathing a Sigh of Relief ...

... as the Wake School Board votes to make the senior project optional for 2010 grads. The classes of 2011 and beyond will have to do the work involved with the project, so sophomores and freshmen on down won't be so lucky. Even if the state delays official implementation of it next year, Wake County School Board members say they will make it a local requirement. Read more here.

Update: I just… Continue

Tolkien Returns With "The Children of Húrin"

Legendary author JRR Tolkien (1916-1973) charged his third son, Christopher Tolkien, with the job of serving as his literary executor after his death. Christopher's first job was to organize the huge volume of papers that JRR Tolkien generated during his lifetime. This lead to Christopher publishing "The Silmarillion" in 1977, which condenses the creation and mythology of Middle-earth, elves, men, dwarves and other creatures. Christopher went on to publish "Unfinished Tales" (1980), and the… Continue

TrendTRACKS: Happy Earth Day! Recycle and Reuse Crafts

We celebrated Earth Day today by getting outside and flying a kite. It was a bit windy but I really enjoyed the fresh air and time with my little guy as we tried to get his new batman kite flying high.

We also planted some seeds a couple weeks ago and are getting ready to plant a garden. Cukes, cherry tomatoes and green peppers! I am so excited to see how they all grow and my kids are learning a valuable lesson.

If I were a… Continue

Happy Spring! Not so Happy Allergies.

Allergies? My kids have awful allergies. So much so, that opening windows in the Spring time is a no-no for us. But even if you don't open your windows to let the cool breeze blow in, allergens can still be left all over our houses.

Seventh Generation tells us of some green ways to take care of that by clicking… Continue
