NEW HOPE VALLEY RAILWAY TRAIN RIDES
New Hope Valley Railway and N.C. Railroad Museum, New Hill

CALL FOR ENTRIES: NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART CONTEST
The North Carolina Museum of Art has announced  a call for entries for its online Art Challenge Competition.
Professional and amateur artists of all ages are invited to create a work of art inspired by the museum’s modern masterpiece Raqqa II by Frank Stella and submit an image of their original work of art via the photo sharing website Flickr. The deadline for online image submissions to Flickr is Friday, Aug. 29, 5 p.m. Participants must join Flickr and upload a JPEG image or scan of his or her original work of art to the Museum’s Art Challenge group at www.flickr.com/groups/artchallenge. The winners will be posted on the Museum’s Art Challenge website and exhibited in the Education Lobby from Nov. 25, 2008, to April 5, 2009. Learn more about the contest here.

LIVE ON STAGE FROM MARBLES KIDS MUSEUM & NORTH CAROLINA THEATRE
Aug. 10 at 3:30 for kids ages 8-10. (The 2 p.m. workshop for ages 5-7 is full.) Marbles Kids Museum and North Carolina Theatre bring you Live on Stage with Broadway actor Ray Walker.  This engaging musical theatre workshop will have your kids singing, dancing and performing up a storm! MARBLES MUSEUM KICK-OFF TO KINDERGARTEN
Aug. 17, 4-6 p.m.
Celebrate this special time of excitement and wonderment with your kindergartner! This event is designed to help kids, and their families, transition into school and make this a very memorable milestone. BLACK LIGHT INSECT HUNT

The Museum of Life and Science, Durham in association with the Carolina Butterfly Society invites you to join its Black Light Insect Hunt for a chance to explore the special nighttime behavior of insects including beetles, moths, fireflies and others. Using a special black light and screen, Museum entomologist Leon Bradford and Wake Forest University Professor of Biology Dr. Bill Connor will lead the event at the Museum’s wetland observation deck located at the outdoor Explore the Wild exhibit.
Black Light Bug Hunt admission: $5 adults; $2 children under 12.

KIDZU CHILDREN'S MUSEUM INTRODUCES 'KidZOOM: THE POWER OF CREATIVITY' EXHIBIT
“KidZoom: The Power of Creativity” will inspire children to exercise creativity in all areas of life and to imagine what the future can hold for their own community. Fantastic creations by local artists, craftspeople, authors and others set the scene for this dynamic, colorful exhibit designed to harness our greatest natural resource: children’s creative energy. “KidZoom” features three  creation zones, all powered by children’s imaginations. DEAD SEA SCROLLS ON VIEW AT N.C. MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCES
Through Dec. 28. The Dead Sea Scrolls is an exhibition that tells a story that is beyond words, beyond time and beyond our imaginations. Experience the most remarkable archaeological discovery of the 20th century: the oldest surviving manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible, known to Christians as the Old Testament. DRAWING FOR KIDS

Sat., Aug. 9; 10 a.m. to noon (held the second Saturday of each month). Children ages 9-12 explore art in the galleries, then work with teachers to develop specific drawing skills found in those works. Learn more here.

SOUNDSPACE: HEAR MOTION
Museum of Life and Science
Through October 2008. This interactive music installation shows movement being converted into sound. Enter a 30x30-foot soundspace where free movement creates sounds based on images captured by a series of web cameras. The faster you move, the faster the sounds come to life. This exhibit was created in partnership with Duke Engineering’s Visualization Technology Group and the Duke Music Department. Learn more here.

SUMMER WINGS BUTTERFLY PAVILION

REGISTER FOR groundSPARK: THE RALEIGH STREET PAINTING FESTIVAL BY AUG. 29
The 10th Annual groundSPARK Raleigh street painting festival will be held in Moore Square Sept. 19-21, 2008. Visual Art Exchange produces the festival, which featured over 400 artists last year chalking for 27 hours and transforming Martin Street into a work of art. Artists of all ages and abilities are welcome and you will compete for $3000 in cash prizes. Chalking begins at 3 p.m. Sept. 19, and all designs must be completed by 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 to be considered for prizes. Entry is FREE and chalk is provided IF you register by Aug. 29. After the Aug. 29 there is a $5 per team fee. There is no theme this year. Learn more here.

3rd ANNUAL HOPE'S HOPE GOLF CLASSIC
Mon., Aug. 11 at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary. The money raised will support the Hope's Hope mission in 2008 and 2009, which is to provide financial and supportive services to families with children dying from a very rare terminal neurological disease called INAD (Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy). This is a very aggressive neurodegenerative disease with an onset at around 18 months of age and a life expectancy of 5-10 years. 32nd ANNUAL TOWN OF CARY LAZY DAZE ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL

BLACK BELT TAE KWON DO DEMONSTRATION

Samantha Lutz, an active 14 year old and certified Tae Kwon Do instructor with Pecks Tae Kwon Do in Raleigh, is a Girl Scout earning her silver award. As part of that award, she will help lead this black belt demonstration with instructors, parents and teachers.
