SUMMARY:Tree-lighting Ceremony Starts Holiday Season at State Capitol
DESCRIPTION:The tree-lighting tradition at the State Capitol will cont
 inue this year when Gov. Bev Perdue and First Gentleman Bob Eaves ligh
 t the Christmas tree on Thursday, Dec. 9. The Junior Woman’s Club an
 d State Capitol staff sponsor this free public celebration.\n\nThe eve
 nt starts at 5 p.m. with the lighting of luminaries and the performanc
 e of holiday music by the Raleigh Concert Band and the Langston Ladies
  and Lads singing group. The governor and first gentleman will make th
 eir way to the South grounds at 6:15 p.m. to officially begin the cere
 mony. The lit tree will be visible the length of Fayetteville Street.\
 n\nThe Junior Woman’s Club will give away cookies and hot chocolate 
 while local sports team mascots entertain the crowd prior to the cerem
 ony. Even Santa is scheduled to make an appearance.\n\nGirl Scouts wil
 l seek food donations for the local food bank as they go “Caroling f
 or Cans” throughout the evening.\n\nThe annual holiday open house wi
 ll begin at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited inside to see the Capitol
 s holiday decorations and listen to the Farmington Woods Elementary 
 School Hand Bell Choir perform in the rotunda.\n\nVisitors will find t
 he N.C. Museum of History and its gift shop open, and will enjoy the g
 iant decorated tree in the lobby. Old-fashioned toys and games, “mak
 e-and-take” paper candle decorations and museum exhibits add to the 
 fun. The museum will offer reduced admission of $5 to the “Discover 
 the Real George Washington” exhibit, and children under age 18 are a
 dmitted free.\n\nThe N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences also will be open
 , offering hands-on activities and “meet the animals” for children
 . At 7 p.m. the museum will host a lecture, “Life in a Raindrop-Expl
 oring Micro-Arthropods Around the World,” by Dr. Neville Winchester 
 of the University of Victoria.\n\nSponsors are the State Capitol Found
 ation, State Historic Sites Division of the N.C. Department of Cultura
 l Resources, N.C. Department of Administration-Facility Management, N.
 C. Museum of History, N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences and the Junior W
 oman’s Club of Raleigh.\n\nThe 24-foot tree was grown by Peak Farms 
 in Ashe County and will stand in honor of John L. Sanders and the Stat
 e Employees of North Carolina. There will be free parking along the st
 reet and in state government lots after 5 p.m.\n\nThe State Capitol op
 en house continues through Dec. 12, with local groups performing holid
 ay music at various times each day.\n\nThe State Capitol’s mission i
 s to preserve and interpret the history, architecture and functions of
  the 1840 building and Union Square. The Capitol is bounded by Edenton
